US retail sales preview: Downside risks to consensus - TDS

FXStreet (Delhi) – Paul Fage, Senior Emerging Markets Strategist at TD Securities, suggests that US Retail sales for Sep is the highlight and we see downside risks to consensus.

“We look for +0.1% m/m in headline sales, while our forecast for ex-autos is even weaker at -0.1% as falling prices at the pump weigh on nominal sales figures (mkt +0.2% and -0.1% respectively). In contrast, the control group, which strips out building materials along with autos and gas should be slightly more constructive at +0.4% m/m (mkt +0.3%).”

Derek Halpenny, Research Analyst at MUFG, notes that after the comments from Governor Brainard firmly put her in the dovish camp by signalling a greater desire for delay, Governor Tarullo spoke yesterday and endorsed the view of Brainard stating explicitly that current conditions were not appropriate for an increase in the federal funds rate.
